Children’s day Celebrations

Article by Jc Sakunthala

Program:   Children’s day Celebration
Venue:       People’s Trust Campus, SriRamanahalli, Bangalore
Date :          25 Nov 2012

When we thought of doing this program we wanted it to be more than just an entertainment. We wanted the TREP children to engage themselves in creative time.
People’s Trust campus is away from the hustle and bustle of the city and some of the village atmosphere is still retained.

Few weeks earlier, we requested the students to prepare exhibits during their spare time using any material from plants and trees and avoid using any color pencils and we have given a code name “Art with nature” for this project.
Jc Harsha is the Program Director and we met few times for planning and preparation.   Finally, we consolidated few requirements

Ø  Maximum participation is more important

Ø  Children be engaged both physically and mentally

Ø  Team sprit should be encouraged

Ø  Material needed for the events should be minimal
We finalized the  events and  collected all that is needed for events.

When we reached the People’s trust campus, we were greeted warmly by  Mr.Manjunath, Mr.Harsh, Ms.Varini and Ms.Ramya and the children.
We had planned the celebrations where students will have  a physical warm up game and  proceed to more intellectual games.

Nine groups were formed  and each group nominated 2 pairs for a relay three leg race.

Each team came with their own strategies and did their best.

The teams Badrinath, Bhoomi, Kedarnath, Pruthvi and Vasudha reached the finals round.

Teams Kedarnath and Pruthvi came out as winners.

The second event was designed to help students have fun as  group, improve their  focus, spelling, accuracy and speed of communication.
Students formed five team and selected attractive names for their teams.  All the teams  performed well. After 4 rounds, the teams scores were between 21 to 27 points.   Team JCI Friends came out as winner.

The indoor activity involved the innovative Pictionary game where the  teams used indegenous schemes to get the answers. Few challenging ones  Bhagat Singh, Solar systems, Idly were cracked in no time.  After three rounds, Team TREP Tigers came out as the winner with an amazing timing of 58 seconds

When Mr.Manjunath took us to the room with exhibits of “Art with Nature”, we became speechless. Children had let their imagination run wild and created wonderful art using all natural materials.

I am sharing all those with you.
The above art is created by children of room Amarnath .  There is Ganesh, the God of knowledge inside a temple. The fern leaves form a nice arch work below.  Can you spot the papaya leaves and the letter ‘Ohm’?  How about the green beads?

Here is the  symbol of  Love, the Tajmahal created  by children of room Badrinath to depict the message of love and peace. The minarets are represented by the sticks and leaves are arranged to  get the Tajmahal here.

The above piece of art is by the children of room Bhoomi.  The roof material here is the real dried sticks.  Can you spot the rock and waste segregation bins?  They have even used natural material to color their drawings. Innovative. Isn’t it?

This peacock was created by children of the room Dharani.   The trunk of the tree is a real tree bark. The canopy of the tree is formed using fern leaves. The grass is formed by cutting and arranging the banana leaves.

The body of the peacock is again from banana tree. The feathers of the peacock created by arranging the leaves.  The red color dots are indeed the dried red seeds from a plant. The peacock is surrounded by butterfly and everything is bathed in bright sun light!

The above piece of wonder is put together by children of room Kedarnath.  can you spot the animals,  lady pumping water, carrying a jug,  a man is trying to break a wooden log,  wooden cart, houses,  birds,  food getting ready with fire using TeePee,  lady with a load on her head?   How about Little bushes?   Canopy of the tree is formed using the Moss.
The crown on this art is the bouquet on the top right corner with flowers and dried seeds and its cover.  Wonderful Art.  isn’t it?

The above  art work is from the children of room Kashinath.  They have used the dried mesh like material which  holds the coconut leaves to the tree. This dried mesh stuff is rolled to form the base for the bouquets.  can you spot  temple, mosque and church here?

Their room name is engraved using millets (Ragi) and decorated with bunch of Ragi harvest. Various colorful petals decorate the border   If  you are wondering what is millet, google is always there to get you answers :-)

The above piece of art is by the children of room Pruthvi. It is a beautiful house built using the leaves of coonut tree and is placed adjacent to a lovely garden.  Can you sport the "welcome" and "Thank you" archs?

The above piece of art is by the children of room Vasudha.  The floor is created using raw earth, with five houses surrounded by trees, birds and a bright sun overhead.

The above piece of art put together with plant material  by the children of room Vasundhara.   If you are a careful observer you might wonder if it is a fish or a green chilly!.
Can you spot the  group of houses, the forest , hills in the background, birds, animals, people,  small little  pond with various fishes, swan?  Are  you not  afraid of the snakes?

We  have selected 4 of the 9 exhibits for special awards. We  will not reveal the names. Let us see if your selection match with  ours!  You are welcome to share  your selections in the comments section !

Act Your Age

Article by Jc Madhumathi, Secretary

Program:   Family picnic of our chapter members
Venue:       Happy Homes Resort at Nelamangala
Date :         2 Oct 2012.

“All work and no play makes and person dull and dumb” – Author unknown

First some mathematics:  When two individuals have fun together, is it the sum of their individual fun?  No, it is not addition, what happens is multiplication.    Yes, the fun gets multiplied when you are in group.

The first fun started with waiting for one another to arrive, on the busy, beautiful Bangalore-Mangalore highway where everyone was just 10minutes away from reaching that place!.  The  true Indian style “just 10 min away”.

Finally, we all met and preceded towards our picnic spot.  It was a serene mango groove.  It had rained couple of days earlier and the entire place looked great with beautiful green trees and fresh earth.

We were thoroughly entertained by various games which tested our presence of mind, fast response and humour quotient.

When the  first brain is getting  entertained, we should  neglect our second brain too.   We  were  served with  various snacks and soft drinks and later a sumptuous lunch too.

Post lunch, we all roamed around the resort exploring different sights and sounds.

Here are  some  photos to  share our fun with other members too.

Article by Jc Nandhini

Program:  Hypnosis and Mind
Venue:  BASIX – Centre for Human Excellence
Date :  22, 23 Oct  2012
Traininer:  Jc.Dr.C.J.Jeyachander

Most of the things on the world have dualities like, day & night, black & white, push & pull and this list goes on.   We cannot say day is good and night is bad.  Each can be utilised in the right way to get the maximum benefit to the human life.
There are few apprehensions about   Hypnosis among the general public.   The nuclear energy can be used   for both constructive and destructive purposes.  The wise men will use it for constructive purposes. The hypnosis is so powerful and when used constructively, it will provide immense rewards.

We are all so busy with various activities and find less time to explore what we really are.    A person can feel   lonely in a crowd and feel at peace when alone too.   This magic can be achieved by understanding and directing our mind properly.

A two day program on Hypnosis and Mind was organized by our chapter. The program caters to people   from various walks of life irrespective of their age and education background.
The program was designed to understand and make use of the power of mind in the most productive way.

This benefits of this program  are,

Ø  Increased positive thoughts

Ø  Improved calmness

Ø  Improved memory

Ø  Improved concentration and focus

Ø  Increased confidence and will power

Ø  Working with emotions

Ø  Releasing emotions

Ø  Increased productivity

Ø  Increased creativity

Participants thoroughly enjoyed the whole process built in with lot of activities, demonstrations, role plays and presentations.

I know JCI is well known for it training programs which will make shining gems out of ordinary stones and what I did not know was that JCI even provides the opportunity to make you aware to get shining teeth.
On Sunday 16 September,   JcDr Vinay, JcDrAshwini, Jc Sucheta and Jc Sakunthala reached the People’s Trust campus.  The students were very busy honey bees with their week end housekeeping responsibilities and hockey practices sessions for their upcoming district level tournaments.

Two inspection tables were setup and 48students were examined meticulously by  Jc Dr. Vinay and JcDr.Ashwini. Students were given general tips and specific advices were given on special cases.

In general, the dental hygiene of all the students were found good and 10 students have been referred to undergo specific treatments at the clinic.   Jc. Dr Vinay had been kind enough to offer to treat these students at his clinic.
Later,   all the staff and students were assembled.   Jc Dr Vinay had explained very interestingly the details about how to brush, when to brush and with what to brush.   It was extremely informative to listen to him explain all these facts.  This is where I realized all along my life I was not following the right procedure and I learnt the correct way of   brushing my teeth J

When we were taking care of their teeth, People’s trust management were busy to take care of our stomach.   We were given a very warm lunch which consisted of the nutritious Ragi balls, unpolished rice and tasty sambar.

Time Management - Aug 2012

Article by Jc Harsha

Time management is the process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities, to increase
  • Effectiveness
  • Productivity

And so, JCI Bangalore Horizon took up time management as its first internal development program. This programme was held on 26 Aug 2012 at ISOL premise and conducted by Jc Dr. C J Jeyachander, President of our chapter.

It touched upon various aspects of time management in a simple and open manner. The participants were pushed to think about the topic and the changes they can make in their lives rather than a rigid and a standard one size for all approach.

The program’s format encouraged people to get involved and add their thoughts to the discussion. All the points and suggestions put forth by the trainer were discussed and dissected by the participating members, often making for interesting debates.

There were also various games and exercises which helped the members bond and lose their inhibitions. Some of the unavoidable and repeated topics in time management such as procrastination, prioritization were covered in a unique and fresh way.

Different methodologies and regimes were introduced to the members and they were left free to choose what was best for them.

On the whole, this program was extremely useful and fun, with tips which had practical applications

JCI Bangalore Horizon Chapter Induction

Article by Jc Sakunthala N

Month of August has been usually my lucky month.  So many lucky things like my first job, friend’s marriage, change of job etc; last year it was HMP training.   So there an eager anticipation as the month of August approached and passed.    For a difference,   I realized later in September that something important had indeed happened in this year’s August too

I guess,   I should be discussing about our Chapter induction and not about my sentiments…

My journey with JCI started with a call from Jc Anuradha on week day.   I did not have any clue about JCI and I was wondering whether to go or not.  Unless it is important, Jc Anuradha would not have called us on that day.  So, I decided to go.

There was a gathering of around 15.  A JCI member from another chapter addressed us explaining what JCI is and how it will help individuals

We had follow up meetings. There was excitement in the air.  There was a brainstorm session to come with the chapter name.  Finally all of us agreed with “Bangalore Horizon”.  Office bearers were selected.

All other activities of membership’s fees, getting new members, designing of logo followed soon.

The induction day, venue modalities kept on changing.  Probably Our President might have spent numerous rounds of talks before the date was finalized.   Zone Executive Vice President(Zone D) Jc Subburaj was scheduled to visit Bangalore and it decided our chapter will be formally inducted on that day.

We all met again to discuss about the chapter induction. It was a tremendous team work. Someone volunteered to sponsor the banners, badges, someone else sponsored flowers for the occasion, someone volunteered to make handmade scrolls as gifts to the guests and not to forget the gentlemen who sponsored the audio system.

There was so much of work to do, Mementoes to be designed and purchases, scrolls to be made, various follow up with the venue, food etc.

Some of us were busy giving final touches to our preparation on that day of induction and  everything just fell into place before the event is due to start J

With excitement, we all reached the venue and it was   very pleasant evening.   There was a huge gathering of our brother JCI chapters and the place was filled with laughter and chatter everywhere.

There was pin drop silence the moment the function was started.  We were amazed by the professionalism with which the business was conducted.

Then came our turn for the chapter to be inducted.  Then something which we have not even dreamt happened.  Two very eloquent JCI members introduced each member of our chapter to the gathering in such a manner that we all felt we are kings and queens.  (I learnt later that JCI member are trained even in this skill)

JCI oath was administered to all JCI BH members and CGB team.   We were rained with congratulations by our brother chapter member.  Zone Executive Vice President Jc Subburaj congratulated us and addressed the gathering.  All other formalities followed and the function concluded with dinner.

There was happiness and feelings of achievement on our faces when we were leaving. What a wonderful day it was.  A new chapter… A new beginning. The seed is sown and it is going to grow stronger and wider in the days to come…

Coming back to my August sentiment..   Everyone including our chapter President were pouring praises that there are only few other places that will match the standards of JCI training. I expected the JCI trainings will be good but it was hard for me to believe it was one of the best.  As an ignorant individual, I did not take this seriously.

My impression changed fully when we underwent the EPS training later and realized that indeed, our President’s statement was true.  I felt lucky that I have joined JCI.

I forgot to tell you.  Our chapter induction happened on 15 August 2012. J

Independence day celebrations - Aug 2012

Article by   Jc Suchetha, Secretary

What is Independence?
Independence means different to different people. For some it is the freedom of expression, freedom of choice while for others it is the very basic freedom to live, to be alive.

We asked the same question to a bunch of school students; to come up with their own idea of independence. They were asked to depict their ideas in the form of a chart. This is how we, JCI – Bangalore Horizonites celebrated our first ever social event

JCI – Bangalore Horizon wanted to celebrate our I-Day in a special, more meaningful way and  what better way to celebrate than with school kids when the young minds gives us the utmost, pure meaning of Independence

The day of 15 Aug, 2012 began with 5 of our chapter members heading for People trust campus at Sri Ramanahalli to meet the students of TREP (Total Residential Education Program). Around 50 boys and girls are given free education and accommodation here.

We were introduced to some of the great, inspiring people from all walks of life.
  • An ex-army brigadier, who has seen many battles and earned many awards,
  • An American couple, who have dedicated their life to impart value based growth to the underprivileged children
  • Other staff members, who play key roles in the success of this program
We were given a tour around the campus by two simple yet great personalities,   Mr.Harish Uthaiah, and Mr.Bobji,   who are the inspiration behind the TREP

Along the way, we came across numerous kids who cheerfully greeted us with the words ‘Sai Ram’. Everywhere and in everyone we found simplicity, humbleness and noble thoughts.

After the brief tour of the campus, soon it was lunch time and we had organized for a special lunch for the kids and staff of TREP complete with delicious dessert et all. The kids loved it!

Post lunch, we were taken to the ‘Sun room'; a big, spacious room upstairs, which was pleasantly illuminated by lots of sunlight. The prayers were in order, many patriotic songs followed.
Earlier, we had requested the children to form groups and prepare charts on theme of Indian Independence
We were amazed by their creativity exhibited through the charts.  We collected the charts and carried them back to select the three best charts.

Chocolates and few other basic stationery were distributed to the students.
The entire experience reinforced my trust in JCI. I realized the meaning of independence in a whole another perspective. The feeling of goodwill in this place is infectious.
This experience makes us believe and reinforces our faith in humanity that much more. It was an absolutely different, unique, inspiring experience and that is exactly what it makes it so special. One of my childhood dreams came true on 15 Aug thanks to JCI, looking forward to more such visits.
